Akwatia is in mourning once more.
Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament for the Eastern Region constituency, has died at just 40 years old. His death, believed to have been caused by cardiac arrest, occurred suddenly on Monday, 7 July 2025.
This marks the second time in less than a decade that a New Patriotic Party MP representing Akwatia has died while in office. In 2017, Dr Kofi Asare perished in a road accident under similarly tragic circumstances.
Kumi had only begun his tenure after winning the December 2024 election. In his brief time in Parliament, he emerged as a committed advocate for youth, health and infrastructure. He had launched borehole projects, supported education, and pushed for a vocational training centre in the area. He served actively on the Youth and Sports and Budget committees.
Despite political turbulence surrounding his election, Kumi was quickly gaining cross-party respect. His passing has left a painful void in both the constituency and Parliament.
Preliminary reports indicate cardiac arrest as the cause of death. The family has yet to release an official statement.
For Akwatia, the grief is all too familiar. Eight years ago, Dr Asare’s sudden death shocked the region. Now, the sorrow returns—deeper, heavier, and far too soon.
Ernest Kumi (1984–2025): A future unfinished.
