President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated the GoldBod Taskforce, a new enforcement body established to combat illegal gold trading and restore accountability in Ghana’s mineral sector.
At the launch event in Accra on Tuesday, July 8, the President emphasized that the taskforce will operate with full transparency, guided by strict oversight mechanisms designed to uphold public trust.
“Every member of the taskforce will operate under strict oversight,” President Mahama stated. “All officers will wear body cameras during operations, and taskforce vehicles will be GPS-tracked and monitored in real-time.”
The taskforce’s mandate includes tackling illegal small-scale mining — widely referred to as galamsey — which has led to severe environmental degradation, especially in rivers and protected forest areas.
To prevent abuses of power and ensure operational discipline, the President also announced a procedural safeguard:
“A written warrant from the CEO is required before any field operation is undertaken.”
The initiative is expected to support the recovery of lost mineral revenue, promote sustainable resource management, and improve enforcement integrity in the mining sector.
The GoldBod Taskforce will begin field operations in the coming weeks.
