Road Projects Stalled Over Debt, Ministry Promises Action on Ofankor-Nsawam Highway

Minister blames previous government’s funding mismanagement; drivers demand urgent repairs amid safety concerns

Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has revealed that nearly all road projects in Ghana are currently on hold due to debt issues.

He criticized the previous government for awarding contracts without securing the necessary funds. This came as a response to urgent demands from the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG), which raised alarms about the dangerous state of the Ofankor-Nsawam road.

C-DAG called on the ministry to quickly resume and speed up work on the Amasaman-Nsawam highway, warning that its poor condition is damaging vehicles, risking lives, and disrupting businesses.

“We’re giving the ministry a four-day ultimatum to restart construction. If nothing happens, we will hold a peaceful demonstration,” the association said, urging media, civil society, and the public to support their call.

Minister Agbodza acknowledged the problem, saying, “Almost all road projects are stalled due to debt and unsustainable awarding of contracts without available funds. We are working with the finance ministry to raise money to pay off some debts and get contractors back to work, including on the Ofankor road.”
