In one of the most dramatic matches in recent Club World Cup history, Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal pulled off a stunning 4–3 victory over Premier League giants Manchester City on Monday night, sending shockwaves through the football world.
The game, more fitting for the drama of a wrestling broadcast than a routine Monday night fixture, saw Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo score twice—including the match-winner—to knock out the reigning English champions.
Speaking emotionally after the match, Leonardo dedicated the performance to his mother, who recently spent 70 days in intensive care.
“I’ve had a difficult time these past two months,” he said. “My mother was in the ICU, and now she’s recovering. She watched the match tonight. These goals were for her.”
Al-Hilal head coach Simone Inzaghi, who joined the club just a month ago after parting ways with Inter Milan following a 5–0 Champions League final loss to Paris Saint-Germain, praised his players for their resilience—especially in the absence of key stars Salem Al-Dawsari and Aleksandar Mitrovic due to injury.
“We knew we had to climb Mount Everest without oxygen,” Inzaghi said. “But these players showed extraordinary heart. They deserved this win—it’s a moment of pride for the Al-Hilal family, for Saudi Arabia, and for our fans.”
Former England international Andros Townsend, speaking on DAZN, summed it up:
“Al-Hilal have shocked the world.”
The result marks one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s recent history and signals a growing presence of Saudi clubs on the global football stage.
